Impress your friends and family with these amazing kitchen tricks.
Tell a raw egg from a cooked egg ~ Lightly twirl the egg on a smooth, flat surface. A hard-boiled egg will easily spin; a raw egg will wobble. (Note: If you spin them hard enough, both eggs will spin rather easily and quickly. The trick is to give them just a gentle nudge. Done properly, the raw egg will wobble.) That's all there is to it!
Soften brown sugar ~ From the back of the C&H bag: Place sugar in oven-proof container and warm in 250°F oven until soft. OR, place in microwave container and heat on high, checking every 30 seconds. HINT: To keep it soft, put a piece of bread in the container before storing.
Chop nuts without a chopper ~ A quick way to chop nuts if you don't have a nut chopper is to pour the nuts into a durable zip-lock bag, or between two layers of waxed paper. Roll over the nuts with a rolling pin until they are the desired size.
Keep punch cold and flavorful ~ Instead of using plain water, make an ice ring out of the same ingredients as the punch. It will keep the punch cold without diluting it as it melts. If you're serving from a pitcher, make ice cubes instead of a ring.
Measure shortening the easy way ~ Here's an easier method to measure shortening. Pour 1-2 cups water into a large measuring container. Spoon the shortening into the water until the water reaches the level equal to the original amount of water plus the desired amount of shortening. (Example: 1 cup water + 1/2 cup shortening = 1-1/2 cups total.) Strain out the water and add the shortening to the other recipe ingredients. Use a container large enough so that the shortening floats in the water and doesn't stick to the cup. This method also works for peanut butter. Be sure to strain out as much water as possible.
More to come!
