Width: At least 3 feet before a trimming in summer
Bloom color: Blue with hint of violet and a small central white eye
Bloom time: April into Winter (still blooming at the end of January 2003), though bloom is heaviest in spring and early summer.
Scent: None
Sun/shade: Best in morning sun, or dappled shade throughout the day. Protection from afternoon sun in hot summer areas.
Moisture: Best with regular water.
Pruning: In early spring, cut back to new growth near base of plant. Lightly prune again in summer (after heaviest flush of bloom is over) to freshen up the plant's appearance.
Conditions: Growing in the dappled shade of a large Mimosa tree.
Other comments: Beautiful, floriforous plant. Looks best if kept as a billowing mound by trimming back long trailing stems in summer after heaviest flush of bloom; will continue lightly blooming into fall. I've found only one self-sown seedling, but seedlings reportedly do not come true. Foliage has some red coloring in the fall.
Recommended companions: The blooms look beautiful with red (such as Salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red'), yellow (true lemon yellow such as Daylily 'Happy Returns'), and pure white (examples include Heliotrope, Impatiens). Daylilies and Agapanthus or other similar strap-like foliage plants provide good foliage contrast. The Geranium is also good with spring bulbs and the foliage makes a nice cover for yellowing bulb foliage.
