The Important Stuff

Important Records

You need to have a place for your important records.  No, not a place all over the house, and not just any place. You need to have one place to store your important records at home so you'll always know where to find them.  I suggest filing these records in a RED hanging file folder so you'll recognize them at a glance.  These are the ones you'd grab in a fire, the ones that would be very difficult, if not impossible, to replace.  They include:

NOTE:  The originals of some of these documents should be stored in your safe deposit box.

Protecting Your Identity and Credit Cards

If your wallet was stolen today, full of your credit cards and other identification records, do you have the necessary information handy so you can quickly report them missing?

Record the contents of your wallet and keep it in a safe place. Here's an easy way to do it:  Using a photocopier or scanner, photocopy the contents of your wallet including credit cards, driver's license, Social Security card, and other important information. Place them on the copier and copy both sides. This will provide you with all the information you will need to call and cancel your cards. Now, put the photocopy in a safe place where you can quickly find it if your wallet is stolen.

What to do if your wallet is stolen:

Immediately take the following steps to protect your credit and identity:

  1. Call the three national credit reporting organizations, plus the Social Security Administration fraud hotline, to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#:
    • Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
    • Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
    • Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
    • Social Security Administration (fraud hotline): 1-800-269-0271
  2. Cancel your credit cards by calling the toll-free number on each card
  3. File a police report in the area where your wallet was stolen.

A Safe-Deposit Box

You should have a place away from home to store very important records in case of burglary or fire. A safe deposit box at your bank is the best place.  Records to store there include:
